Young, Zina Diantha Huntington
Biography
31 Jan. 1821–28 Aug. 1901. Midwife, civic leader. Born in Watertown, Jefferson Co., New York. Daughter of William Huntington and Zina Baker. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Hyrum Smith, 1 Aug. 1835, in Watertown. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, Oct. 1836; to Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, summer 1838; to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, Apr. 1839; and to Commerce (later Nauvoo), Hancock Co., Illinois, May 1839. Married first Henry B. Jacobs, 7 Mar. 1841, in Nauvoo; later separated. Plural wife of JS, sealed on 27 Oct. 1841. Resided in Nauvoo Fourth Ward, ca. 1842. Joined Female Relief Society of Nauvoo, 24 Mar. 1842. Married third Brigham Young as a plural wife. Moved to Mount Pisgah, Clarke Co., Iowa Territory, May 1846. Moved to Winter Quarters, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska), Oct. 1846. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, 1848. Took a course in obstetrics and directed school of obstetrics in Salt Lake City, 1850s. Appointed treasurer of Relief Society in Salt Lake City at its reorganization, 1866. Appointed president of Deseret Silk Association at its organization, 15 June 1876. Resided in Provo, Utah Co., Utah Territory, 1880. Helped establish Deseret Hospital; served as its president, 1880–1892, and on its board of directors. Appointed counselor to Eliza R. Snow in general Relief Society presidency, 19 June 1880. Attended Woman’s Congress in Buffalo, Erie Co., New York, Oct. 1881; a temperance convention in Vermont; and National Woman’s Suffrage Association Convention in New York. Helped organize Relief Society in New York, 1882. Appointed general president of Relief Society, Apr. 1888, and vice president of National Council of Women, 1891. Died in Salt Lake City.
